Blurring the Lines
Between Work and Play

Some people have a good work ethic. I have a good "play ethic." I think of the earth as a playground. We are the guardians of this remarkable outdoor arena. Mountains and canyons, rivers, lakes and oceans, even desolate deserts beckon to me. Come play. I respond quickly. I love movement. To paddle a kayak through fast moving water... to bound like a gazelle across the African plains...to swim with undulating rhythm like a porpoise... all of these activities make me feel alive. I love to capture my passion for outdoor play through the lens of my camera. I don't think of myself as a journalist; I am a protagonist, an evangelist. I hope my pictures and my stories inspire people to explore an active outdoor lifestyle and experience the healthful benefits of a life fulfilled through play.

I love the sports that I'm involved in and I want my viewers to experience action sports in the same way that I do. I try to give television viewers a sense of "being there" by using participant point-of-view photography. Sometimes this means putting a shock proof and water proof housing on a camera that is mounted to the deck of a kayak that is about to go over a waterfall.

Sometimes it means mounting a camera on a skydiving helmet just before we jump out of a perfectly good airplane from 14,000 feet. It always seems to add to the adventure for me.

The next time you see some really great skydiving adventure on TV and you're thinking how brave the skydivers are, remember there is a skilled photographer up there who is jumping and taking pictures too.
